There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure. – Colin Powell

“Top 10 Singaporean Dreams” (The Straits Times 11/01/09-Part 1)

I bought a The Straits Times on Saturdaydsc02937 and found that there are many “interesting” news which are closely related to our life. So i will post some of the news here and some of my opinions to all the readers of my blog.

This news is about a survey about Singaporeans’ dream. The survey were done for 2008 and 2009 and there is a big contrast between them. The first goal of singaporean in 2008 was ‘seeing the world’ while their goal has changed to ‘family and children’. I think this is the direct effect of the recent economic crisis.  Overall, singaporeans has changed their focus of their goals from personal luxuries and ambitious back on basics such as home and family.

The table shows that self-improvement and making money was ranked second and third in 2008. But they have dropped to no.4 and no.10 in 2009. Personally, i think making money and self-improvement will be more important  in the economic downturn. Lower your mean does not really help to solve your problem and achieve your goals. What do you all think about that?

“Determine to your goals, no matter under what conditions and you will get what you want sooner or later!”

9 things to do during recession

The news of recession have been in newspaper this few months. I believe the current recession has brought some impacts for many people. People now scare of jobs cut, interests drop and etc. So when i ‘googled’ with “10 things to do during recession”, i have chosen 9 that i think could possibly help you to get over this recession period. Why 9 but not 10? Because i think these 9 tips are more than enough :p

1)  Invest in training & education

Mass unemployment mean mass competition, often during heavy dry periods people will head back to school to get an MBA or second degree. I’m not sure how viable that course of action might be but I would certainly focus on education that has some staying power in fields like health care, education, infrastructure and energy. Besides getting an formal education from education institution, there are actually many skills or techniques that you can pick up by your own by reading more books, exploring yourself to more opportunities and etc.

2)Re-Assess your Personal Goals.

Did you do a 5-year plan about 10 years ago and never followed-up? Take a look back at the past few years, where you are now is the result of that. Chart out where you want to be in 5 years and write your goals down. This is a very important things to do so that you will clear that what are needed to be done in order to achieve your goal. In my opinion, you shouldn’t slow down the progress of achieving your goal during recession. Instead, you should find more ways and work doubly hard to accomplish what you want.

3) Network, Network, Network

Now is the time to invest a few bucks in taking old buddies out to lunch and begin the networking process. Lunch an investment? You’d be surprised how a full stomach can open some doors and a person’s gotta eat anyway….For those gal friends, send them a small flower bouquet on their birthday to make yourself visible and networkable. Bill gates once said, the future most successful business model will be the combination between human network and internet. What do you think?

4) Break a Bad Habit.

If you smoke, drink soda or too much coffee, don’t get enough sleep, play on your computer too much, don’t exercise, have bad food management etc., it’s time to take action and focus on breaking the habit. It takes about 30 days to break a bad habit or start a new good habit. Besides breaking a bad habit, i believe adopting some new habits is also very important. Donald Trump told us that, if you continue doing something good for 7 days continuously, you should be able to have a new good habit already.

5)  Invest in others

Networking is a two way street and if you find a job opportunity that doesn’t fit your needs, don’t just throw it away, network with your friends and let them know that a particular company is hiring for a particular skill set. Perhaps a few months into the future a position will open up that meets your criteria and it’s a definite plus to have a friend on the inside that can vouch for you and push the hiring manager in the right direction.

6) Find Something to Cut
Eliminating expenses is the surest route to building a cash safety net. There are many costs you can easily hack away at in your home — dry cleaning bills, dinners out, domestic help. Yet you may be able to save even more, and painlessly, by paying closer attention to the fees you pay for financial services. Switch to a low-fee stock index fund. Make sure you’ve got overdraft protection on your checking account and aren’t needlessly ringing up fees by using another bank’s ATMs. Reassess your life insurance needs. If you’ve quit smoking or lost a lot of weight you may be eligible for a meaningful discount on another policy, and if you’ve paid off the mortgage or the kids have left home you may be able to reduce your coverage. The savings could add up to hundreds of dollars a month.

7) Invest in opportunities

This is perhaps counter intuitive but with mass unemployment during a recession there are people that come up with unique and innovative ideas that have the potential to make a great deal of money. Unfortunately, during recessions, many people don’t have the capital they need to start a business or bring their idea to fruition. Necessity is the mother of invention and innovation is the father of profits, so don’t let any slip you by unnoticed.

8)  Make Sure Your Money is Safe

I believe nothing makes you feel secured than holding some cash in your hand. So start preparing for the worse to avoid the worst.

9)  Invest in God.

Stop by your favorite church, synagogue, or mosque and say “hi” to the old man, it can’t hurt. I myself is a Christian and i strongly believe this.

I have edited and added some of my own opinion to the above points mentioned. So i welcome any other suggestion that everyone of us could do during this difficulty period. I wish everyone all the best and happy new year.

Happy 2009

Wow, year 2008 has just passed one hour ago. First of all, i would like to wish everyone happy new year and all the best in this coming year!!

I believe everyone will have some new year wishes in the beginning of this year. I do have many wishes in the following year as well. I forsee year 2009 will be a challenging year for me. First and foremost, i will be graduating in this coming May. So, i will need to find a job in Singapore when global financial crisis hits. Besides that, i would need to work doubly hard for my business.

Instead of telling what are my wishes here, i think it is better for me to share how do i plan to accomplish my wish. I believe i should use the word ‘goal’ instead of ‘wish’ to represent what i plan to do in the following year. To me, goals give me the obligation and responsibility to achieve it. This would be more meaningful, isn’t it??

My steps to set goal:

1) Set your goal

2) Set a specific date of when you are going to achieve your goal. ( I think not many people will have some goals and wishes like “i want to be rich”, “i want to start a business”, “i want to become slimmer” and etc. But not many people will know when they are getting there.)

3) Make yourself clear about what you can get when you accomplish your goal. ( I think this is important as this will act as a motivator when you are moving towards your goal. I myself is a person who will easily lose my momentum. For example, i will reward myself a Napolean hill’s book if i am able to lose 5kg in the following 2 months. :p)

4) Make youself clear that what are the knowledge that you need to acquire in order to achieve your goal. ( For example, in order to do well in my business, i believe i would need to improve my presentation skill, selling technique, appearance, communication skill and etc.)

I hope those steps mentioned above will be useful for those who would like to achieve something in a shorter time. 😉

Happy new year again to everyone who drop by here. 😀

The Top 10 Mistakes People Make When Starting A Business

I believe the scare of financial crisis has affected many people. The news of jobs cut has been a hot topic since last october. So i believe many people would want to find some ways to earn extra income. For instance, one of my friend told me that he wants to become a boss after his graduation. I have been very interested in entrepreneurship and thinking of becoming a boss myself one day as well.

I came across this article which discussing about "The top 10 mistakes people make when starting a business" from internet. I think this would be very useful for people who would like to start a business without any experience. So i would like to discuss about those mistake in this blog as well :-)

1) Not Enough money

My opinion : I believe everyone realizes that how important cash flow is for any kind of business. Capital is always the main concern when you are starting a business. But i think many people never put the cash flow to run a business into consideration when they starting a business. For a simple example, you have to always pay for your employees before you could actually pay for yourself.

2) Not thinking survival

My opinion: How do you stay around one more day so that you can learn more about your market and close new customers? Sometime you may need to do something that you do not like but it helps to pay the bills. So, i think proper plan is very important for surviving long enough in the business field. Keep yourself learning new things is also one important issue.

3) Losing momentum

My opinion: I think this is a very important issue for an entrepreneur. I have seen some people start their business very excitedly. They think they want to apply what they have learned from the books that they read. They are motivated by many successful people and think that ‘i can do it’. The ‘ i can do it’ feeling will usually fading after they face some failures. So, if you want to become an entrepreneur, try to have the entrepreneur mind first.

4) Doing it all alone

My opinion: If you notice, most of the successful business is not done by one person alone. Nobody is perfect or has the skills to do everything themselves. Having a strong team is of course essential to keep a business going. But there is always disagreements inside a team and your idea usually hardly satisfy everyone. So the technique to manage a good team is also a great knowledge.

5) Not hiring right away

My opinion: In order to save cost, many start ups actually avoiding hiring people. But think about it, how much things that you can do it all alone? how much time do you have in one day for you to run your business? According to the author of “Rich dad poor dad”, OPM(other people time) is a great tool to leverage on and it helps your business grow.

6) Doing it all for the money

My opinion: i think this is simple to understand. You won’t possibly do something for a long period of time if you do not like it.

7) Getting to year one, past year two

My opinion: Many entrepreneurs do not realize that a business usually takes years to see the result. So if you lose your excitement in the first two years, your business may not lasts long. The starting phase of a business is always difficult. You may face many people rejecting you, you may face difficulties of getting rid your inventory and etc. So, prepare to meet the failures before you can be successful.

8) Don’t build around a customer

My opinion: The best way to make money is to find out the problem of you customer and you offer a solution. But i have seen many entrepreneur has done the other way round. They will think that, i will build something good and customers will come. I recommend a book named after <<how do dominate your niche>> and i think you would probably find a solution to solve this problem there. 🙂

9) Don’t seek mentors

My opinion: Yes, many entrepreneurs think that they have acquire a lot of knowledge from school and books. But a great way to get a business going is to find out what other people have done to achieve success and implement those strategies into your own company. I think learning from mentors is the best way to get rid of all the difficulties.

10) Don’t get involved in the community

My opinion: Personal networking is very important for a businessman. I was once work in a PC fair and a young entrepreneur told me that: Business is about how many people you know but not how much you know about the business. I was quite shocking when i heard that but now i realized why.

An informal statistic shows that 95% of start up fail in the first five years. 90% of the remaining 5% fail in the following 5 years. This data shows that many people actually do no realized about the mistakes mentioned above. So welcome all my friends to discuss about how we can learn more and become a successful entrepreneur ya…:-)

Rich dad poor dad (part 2)
